Mettel
Deceptive, fraudulent, and downright despicable

Upon moving, I canceled my telephone service. Unknown to me, I was required to call Mettel to let them know that the long distance also needed cancelled even though I had cancelled my local phone service. I say unknown to me because, as they pointed out to me, I never received any kind of correspondence after they purchased the company I had originally agreed to my service that I had new terms and conditions. When I first signed up with the original company, I was charged 5.9 cents for every minute I talked long distance and no other charges. Upon their purchase, I did not receive any notification of new terms.

When I cancelled, because I originally had agreed to 5.9 cents per minute, I assumed that no usage equalled no charges.

Today, I received my first letter from them stating that I owed them for 3 months of service plus late fees. As I had always been signed up for direct billing to my credit card, I was shocked and dismayed to find that they had not been charging my card. I assumed, since there was no charge on my card, that everything was good.

Today, I find out that the reason they stopped charging my card was because I had moved and changed my address. When my credit card was stolen in January and I received a new card, they notified me immediately that my card was no longer valid. I called them and immediately changed to my new card. Why then, did I not receive the same correspondence. I can only believe it is because they knew I no longer had service (0 minutes for 3 months) and wanted to bilk me for as much money as possible.

Today, they tell me that they cannot credit me for the months I did not use their service nor can they credit me for the late fees. I have never heard of any company that wouldn't make whole a problem like this. I want to warn all others of this and steer them away from this company.
