Avoid a nightmare — Avoid Security Moving, Staten Island, Long Island

We had moved a distance into a rental, no problems with previous company, items were still in boxes. Got estimates from three "local" companies to move from rental into house. (They were not local, as I had been told, and charged for the commute.) Security's sales rep seemed honest and gave me an estimate, and said we would pay by the hour. I asked for, and received, a signed "guaranteed not to exceed" price (about twice the estimate, so it seemed realistic that it wouldn't go over). Sales rep said he would be available to make sure all was well; he never answered calls on or after moving day.

On moving day
- The movers came, sat around smoking all day, finally loading some things in the afternoon.

- They asked to wrap one sofa for $25, then ripped off wrapping already on mattresses and charged $25 each to re-wrap in plastic. They charged for more items than they wrapped or rewrapped. (Once I agreed to wrap one sofa — after they told me they would get it filthy if I didn't agree to pay to wrap it — they said I agreed to hundreds of dollars worth of wrapping.)

- After items were on the truck they told me I would need to pay cash, well over the not to exceed estimate, for them to unload. We finally compromised on a figure $1000 over the not-to-exceed price, and that was only after we threatened to have the police come help decide.

- They tore up the driveway at the rental, drug items putting gouges in the new wood floor, dropped boxes that said fragile (things broke, of course), etc.

- Because we "only" paid $1000 over the guaranteed estimate they unloaded everything they could fit into the garage (saying they would move it from there) and then refused to move things into the house.

- It was dark when they left, so I do think that the few items missing were inadvertently left on the truck and not stolen, particularly since they left a couple of small items that weren't ours.

- I have not filed a BBB report because, frankly, we were afraid of them. I see that they have similar tactics with others so I'm praying they don't remember the details of my move and come here.
