Credit Card rip off on book purchases from legit company

Purchased some books for my granddaughter for Christmas and somehow registered for Smart Savings Center. How I don't know. First credit card bill had $9.99 charge for the supposed savings on books. I immediately got on website and cancelled. Next CC bill had several $1.00 charges for same place. Last months had $1.00 charge, today $2.00 charge. Tried to call automated line to cancel by placing zip code where I live. Never got it right after several tries. Kept coming up incorrect. Called again, got a live person and cancelled. For good this time I hope. How does someone sign up for something they never wanted? Company I purchased books from is a well known internet company I have purchased from before. What happened?
