Grant writing scam

This report is in response to the report # 377584 filed early in the month of October.

I am a small business owner in some financial hard-times right now, and contacted Company Funds after reading a mailer that came to my business. While skeptical, i went along with the man on the phone to hear the pitch.

The man who called me: Bob Sledge, PH 877-943-8637 ext 239. He speaks with a southern accent and is very sincere sounding.

After giving him some particulars about my business, all of which could be found in our annual report filed with the state, he said that he would call me back the next day and let me know what kind of grant money he could get me, stating that companies like Ford Motor and others are obligated to give out millions of dollars by the end of the year in order to maintain tax advantages.

So, he calls me the next day, and says he can get me somewhere along the lines of $400,000 in grants, and the way it works is that i pay 2900 upfront, and 2900 when the grant is received. During this phone call he was very anxious to get me to commit to the first 2900 and faxed me out more information, which is how i received the paperwork with their physical address.

Basically, this is when the hairs on the back of my neck stood up, and i went to my local advocate at the small business administration and asked her if this sounds legit at all. She said to be very careful, and that most of all grant programs, if they are still funded, are given to 501 (c) 3 non-profits, and that in the past 10 years she has never heard of a for-profit business.

Additionally, i called the southern Nevada BBB at 702.320.4500 and inquired into the status of the company. Basically, their BBB status has been revoked due to performing business outside the scope of their intent—basically ripping people off. She also said that the company started in August.

So, all of this transpired last week, and basically now i have just not called back "bob sledge" if that is his real name. If he calls back, i fully intend on calling him out on all of this, or at the very least toying him with the idea that i would be more than willing to come to his business and sign a contract that i write up, giving a time table guaranteeing the grant or some such thing, but i don't think it'll come to that.

Bottom line—don't do this. Even if you are very desperate for cash like i am now, resist the urge to get into bed with Company Funds INC.
