Unapproved charges on debit card

Shops, Products, Services

I noticed a charge of $57.48 on my checking account. It was nothing I ordered and my wife also did not recall ordering anything for that amount. I checked the details of the charge which listed a phone number. The person that answered told me they called my wife on 3-25-08 and she ordered some magazine subscriptions. I was expecting $57.48/yr which would be alot, but I was informed that it was $57.48 PER MONTH, for 20 months then 40 months free. I was also told that today (4-4-08) was the last day it could be cancelled but that my wife had to do it because it was her account (they had no trouble billing a joint account). She called at 2:15 CST only to get a recording that they closed at 3:00 EST. Of course it was impossible to leave a message. I immediately called my bank to report the charge and they cancelled the debit card that was used. Based on the other reports it looks like we can expect a bill from collections sometime in the future. I also noticed reports going back to at least 2006. Why is this blatently fraudulent company still in business?
