Dishonest about Insurance Benefits (Overcharged)

I was looking to purchase a glasses and obtain an eye exam. I found out that JC Penny's was an in-network provider. I contact JCP to schedule an appoinment, in which the receptionist obtained my insurance info over the phone.

I arrived to the appointment and gave the receptionist a hard copy of my insurance card. I was informed that my benefits were verified and I have a $42 charge for the exam.

My overall price for the the complete glasses were more than the cost of a promo JCP was offering. I elected to use the promo for the glasses instead of my insurance. I still used my insurance for the eye exam.

I verified the insurance when I arrived home and found out that I only had a $15 co-pay for the eye exam, and $15 lenses. Also, I have a $100 allowance through the insurance, with me paying 80% of the price of anything over $100.

I contacted my insurance and I was informed that JCP never verified my benefits nor initiated a claim.

I contacted JCP and the receptionist, unfortunately blamed me. I obtained a refund for the difference for the glasses. The Optometrist is refusing to offer a refund until he is paid by the insurance.

Another insurance provider was calling on behalf of another customer with a similar incident. I warn you to bring a copy of your benefits to JCP before attending an appointment, or go elsewhere!
