They played a cruel joke on me, letting me think that I have won money, sending an authoriative looking check. Telling me to contact a Ms Debbie Wade no answer why?

They let me think I was a winner - sent me a check for $3,165.15 - informing me to call a Ms. Debbie Wade at 1-705-77-0354 - she told me to leave my phone number and she will get back to me??? I went on the internet to check this out - found it is a scam. What is the purpose of this? How cruel.
