I answered an ad in a local newspaper for a customer service job. I called the phone number given, 204-887-5183 and reached a very nice woman who told me it was similar to a mystery shopper type of job. But it was "not a scam" like many of them are, Basically, they tell you they will pay you to shop and evaluate the customer service you experience.
I received my first assignment today, 4-12-07.in the envelope was a letter and a cashiers check for $2500.00. My assignment was to cash the check, keep $250 as my pay, then send the rest to a fictitious relative in Ontario, Canada using the Moneygram service at my local Wal Mart.
I thought it sounded a little fishy. I called the number that was on the check for the bank the check was drawn on. I got a guy who said the check was good. I still felt that something wasn't right, so I went online to the bank website, got their customer service number, and called. Turns out, it was a copy of a cashiers check that was issued and already cashed and paid over 12 months ago. The check was bad!
So, if I hadn't been so suspicious I would have sent these people their money, and the check would have been returned to my bank and I would've been liable for a stolen check. I would be liable for $2500, as well as possible legal action! If I had gone to jail for check deception, I would have lost my job as a substitute teacher! Who knows, I may have lost my child as well!
They are scamming honest people who are just trying supplement their income. It's absolutely deplorable!
