Cashier could not make change after cash payment

Walmart only hires idiots as cashiers! The only job requirement is to breathe! For this time I decided to pay for my items in cash, expecting to save some time at the check out, but boy was I wrong.

My total came out to 35.50, I gave the cashier 40.50, wanting a five dollar bill back, but that didn't happen. The cashier obviously didn't look at the amount I gave and keyed in the exact amount.
I explained what had happened and she then proceeded to count on her fingers as to determine how much cash to give back me.
Granted, I am not a mathematician but was happened to the concept of knowing basic math?
As you can see in my situation, we are not talking trigonometry.
If I offended any cashiers who read this, you are the exception to the Walmart staff, you have the ability to read but my question to you, can you subtract?
