America's Choice Readers Service
Ripoff! They change rules and dont honor original agreement to cancel

Shops, Products, Services

This is a copy of a letter we sent by email and
are sending a phyical copy to their PO Box
it well explains what happened.

To, America's Choice Readers Service 17 march

In 2004 we were approached
and offered a subscription to
magazines, that would cost us about $14
a month, I can't remember, the exact
amount.

Because my husband is a
contractor, I asked my husband to
specifically ask, if we could cancel at
any time, as sometimes we are very
strapped, even to buy food.

The Lady giving us the sales talk
left for a few minutes to ask
the supervisor and then
returned and assured us we could.

Having ascertained this, we agreed.

Then in the next few weeks, we got
numerous calls, from different magazine
companies, all claiming we had an
agreement with them. How come? (did
they get our name from you?)

After about 10 days to three weeks, we
got a call from your company and after my
husband had calmed down (because of all
the other calls) and was satisfied this
was the original company, and had
accepted their apology, for all the
confusion, he started listening and as
he is an honorable man he started to
agree as he had originally agreed to
sign up, this is the tape you have of
the verification which is a piece out
of the middle of a longer conversation.

Towards the end of the tape that you
played, as you can plainly tell he, was
hesitating and had to be prompted, for
a reluctant yes. During this
conversation he was becoming more and
more uncomfortable as he was being
asked to agreed to different things
like double payments, and this was the
first time there was any mention, of
such a long contract.

Please send us a
copy of the whole tape and not just the
bit you want us to hear. I would like
to hear the whole recording, as my
husband remembers trying to cancel
immediately after that, and was flatly
told that he could not as it had been
longer than three days since the
original agreement. This is shoddy
practice to say the least.

How were we meant to cancel when we
did not know how and you know say
we were supposed to cancel
within three days (as we were told we
could cancel at any time.)

It was right
towards, the end of the tape, we hear
we have to cancel, within three days
and yet are given no information how to
cancel and even when my husband after
feeling very uncomfortable immediately
wants to cancel, it is denied.

A few weeks later somebody else called and
we tried to cancel yet again and were told
we could not cancel and that the people
who told us we could cancel in the
beginning were wrong and were a
separate entity from them and had just
been doing the sales talk, I thought
this might have been a one off thing
and we might have been willing, to try
and make the payments and accept the
magazines.

I have since found out, this
is not a one off thing, and there are
others, who have similar stories, to
ours which we found out about
accidentally, from a web site which
uncover companies, that rip off their
clients.

We do not believe we have been
treated fairly, we have tried
repeatedly to cancel, and do not
believe we owe you money for things, we
do not want, and have repeatedly tried
to cancel (as was the original
agreement.)

We are now resorting to
asking you in black-and-white, to
cancel yet again. There is no way we
would have agreed to receive the
magazines if we could not have canceled
them.

The original agreement was not,
even properly presented to begin with
and we do not believe we should, have
to honor something that was unfairly
represented to us in the first place.

If we have not been clear enough, we do
not wish to have any magazines! Any
magazines that arrive in our mailbox
will, promptly be returned to sender.

Please inform magazine companies, we do
not wish their magazines.

We have just
been threatened with litigation unless
we agree to pay within one day or it
will be taken to litigation if you are
indeed a reputable company as you
portray yourself to be please deal with
us fairly as originally agreed.

If not we shall meet you at litigation
and expose the tactics that your
company seems to use. At this point in
time I hope you'll forgive me if I
seriously doubt your company is
reputable especially as when I do a
reverse search on your phone numbers
your numbers are unlisted one would
think if you were a reputable company
you would want your phone numbers
known.
