The way that I got hooked into the Columbia House DVD club
was through submenu "choices" linked to an allegedly "free" $250 gift card for K-Mart or Target. When you sign up via a pop-up menu, you are taken to various submenus where you are asked to pledge yourself for $10 - $30 club memberships for various merchandise. Then later you are asked to buy two items or offers for only $1 - $5. It seems innocent enough until you go back and read the small print and realize that your checking account or bank card account is open to legal theft.

After I came to my senses (about 30-45 minutes) after signing up for this, I went back and emailed the companies (Columbia House DVD, Galleria, and one other minor company) that I wanted to unsubscribe. At least in the case of Columbia House DVD I received a reply mail that they had removed my email from their list and cancelled my subscription.

Yet, it has been over a week and my bank account is still missing almost $ 13.00 for the purportedly cancelled DVD account and another $ 2.00 for the lesser accounts. While the amount is small, the principle of the thing excessively irritates me. The original message said a " I had won a free gift card for $250.00." It was obviously a lie and a clever ploy.
