Don't buy the promise!

I lost my job in Feruary of last year in the high-tech meltdown. It was a fairly senior position with a good salary. Head-office closed our doors with no warning.

Given the poor employment prospects in the downturn, I responded to an advertisement Haldane had posted in the newspaper listing positions for senior/experienced personnel.

When I got called in for an interview they told me that their methodology was a proven sucess for many others. Also pledged that their extensive network of contacts within the tech industry would help me to find opportunities that were right for my background, experience, and career growth.

Next they had me bring in my wife to join in the next interview. Their rationale was to involve family in such a major decision. They gave her the same pitch about how they could enhance my career development and uncover hidden opportunities. It appeared we were being thrown a life-line when all seemed lost.

I paid the fee - although I could ill afford the money. If I landed a job at the same level, or better it would be worth it.

However, the only real job interview I landed was for a job I applied for before meeting with Haldane. I got the job, but my success was due to my past experience - just being in the right place at the right time. Haldane did not uncover the opportunity, or provide any inside information.

Although the job was at a significantly lower salary and level of seniority, I accepted the job. I needed some way to pay the bills. MY counsellor at Haldance knew I was still intent on finding a suitable job, but the only contacts I was provided were cold calls - people who may have been past clients or placements, but that had no jobs currently available. It was my job to uncover the hidden opportunity using Haldane's "referral interview" approach. This was a complete bust - of the three names I was given, two were no longer employed or at that location. The third had experienced the Haldane approach and refused to even meet or discuss employement opportunities or provide a referral.

The disappointing thing is they boast this tremendous network that will be working for you, yet it is you who has to do all of the leg-work. I paid over $5000 for no return on the investment.

I would warn all others to think twice before buying their well-practiced lines!
