Package shipping insurance scam and ripoff

I used a local Postal Annex to help me package my sons' AirSoft Gun (toy gun that fires plastic bbs) and to forward the rifle to the manufacturer in Los Angeles (only about 115 miles away). The rifle was shipped in the original box and was wrapped in bubble pack and cushioned with packing peanuts. The gun was brand new but a gear within the rifle had come loose and needed to be repaired. The woman working at the Postal Annex suggested that I use the United Parcel Service (UPS) for 2nd day Air delivery. She also asked if I wanted to insure the shipment in case of damage during shipment... I agreed and paid the premium to have the shipment insured for $400.00 (the purchase price of the gun which came from my son's saved allowance money).

The manufacturer called me and informed that the rifle had been delivered in damaged condition (it was smashed into two pieces; please realize that this rifle was mostly metal not plastic) and that it would not be possible to work on the rifle. I reported the damaged shipment to the UPS and they sent out a claims adjuster who said the rifle was packaged insufficiently thus UPS was not liable for the damages they caused during shipment. I found this out only after calling UPS in Atlanta and talking to a receptionist who would not tell me the name of the contract insurance company. The insurance company representing UPS is (I believe) Crawford and Co. I am sending letters of complaint and intent to take the matter to the San Diego Municipal Small Claims Court. Copies of all correspondence are being sent to the California Insurance Commissioner and a local attorney who is very much interested in the unscrupulous business practices of UPS and their associates. I will never use UPS or Postal Annex again. They will soon see me in court!
