Unauthorized charge of membership to my credit card

I noticed a $9 charge on my credit card and called to find out what it was about. I was told that I had joined Reservation Rewards when booking an airline ticket several months ago. I was completely surprised to find that I had apparently joined and autorized an automatic payment to be charged to my credit card on a monthly basis. Had I not scrutinized my statement carefully, I likely would not have even noticed this charge. When I called the company, they cancelled my membership, but it was a disconcerting experience.
