Street Canvasing Employment Scam: This Company may not pay you for your work, Beware!

After following a Craigslist employment ad, I decided to give Dialogue Direct a chance. They send you out on the streets of whatever major city you find them in, and you basically canvas the crowds of people for $22 per month sponsorships to a charity called Children International. For the most part, they are a legitimate business, and there are employees there gather regular paychecks.

They boast that you can earn 600-1000 dollars per week, and offer performance pay based on the amount of sponsorships you get. After a seemingly successful day, I was told that I had earned $330 for seven sign ups. Coupled with the $10 per hour pay for 7 hours of work, I had earned $400 in one day! Exciting right? After returning to the office I was told that my 7 sponsorships would be bumped to 6, due to the fact that if an individual signs up for more than one child, the charity views it as a poor investment based on their cancellation statistics. Why I should be punished for the work of others before me remains a mystery, but that didn't matter because to date I have NOT RECEIVED PAYMENT for any of these sponsorships.

After countless calls to my supervisor, the Portland office, and the New York headquarters I have yet to even get a response regarding this issue.

Needless to say, I no longer work for this company, and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone looking to get compensated for their work. They basically run the place like a Nazi concentration camp: bring in droves of potential workers every week, fire those who fail to gather 3 sign ups in their first two days of training, and toss aside whoever is left as soon as their daily sign up average falters. Once you are out the door, good luck trying to collect what they owe you. The management is too busy stuffing hash in their bongs to even return a simple phone call, at least here in Portland anyway.

But don't worry, it's all for the sake of helping the children!
