Miscellaneous

Up until recently I was a free member of Friends Reunited Dating and as such looking for a lifelong partner and after posting my profile there received lots of attention but I was highly suspicious as to what sort wanted to talk to me... Why would a twenty-something want to talk with a man in his mid-forties - for example, but I was intrigued and wanted to sign up but there was another thing that worried me and that was a small clause in their sign up text that stated in so many words that AFTER I signed up they would automatically extend any membership plan I choose against my will after my initial planned period was up and at the FULL COST for the period I had chosen.

In plain English they intended to get their money by illegally accessing my bank account and taking it without my permission even though I would have at that time terminated my membership with that company. Then they began putting my name down on other sites, some of them basically little more than hard-core porn sites, and used my image as well without my permission. The use of my image, despite what they might say is an illegal act which up until now CUPID PLC, a company based in Scotland, with an office in London, England, declares as perfectly acceptable and legal - when it is not.

I wrote to Cupid PLC several times demanding that if I signed up for paid membership that they honor one season of membership and NOT charge me additional fees at the end of it. Cupid PLC ignored all but one letter, and when they did reply this is what they sent: (from admin@cupid.com)

"Dear member, Thank you for contacting customer service. To cancel your subscription: Click on the 'My Account' link in the top menu. Click on the 'billing history' link. You must go through the cancellation procedure (enter your password, choose a reason for cancellation). During this procedure you will have the opportunity to check if your email address is correct so that you can successfully receive a cancellation code (sent within an hour) and stop repeat billing. To complete the subscription cancellation process, you must return to the cancellation page and enter the cancellation code that you received in your email. NOTE: Please do not press the 'cancel repeat' button more than once, as the cancellation code you have received will then be invalid and you will have to wait for another code. We would advice you to visit "http://www.cupidplc.com" where you can view all our websites. We are sure that you will find a website that suits more to your standards. We are more than happy to assist you Best Regards, Nikolas Frost - Customer support representative"

Translated, what this customer support letter says is that if their system does not accept your cancellation code the customer will be automatically billed for another cycle - and it is my suspicion that such failures are designed to give Cupid PLC a loophole with which to deny their users any legal recourse - other than going to their bank and having their bank deny Cupid PLC any further access to their funds as they have been taken without permission - an action that constitutes premeditated theft. It is my opinion based on my own experiences and from reading other peoples comments that Cupid PLC is a company whose operating practices are actually criminal and that they should be AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS.in fact, anyone choosing to use any dating service operated by Cupid PLC should cancel their subscription and protect themselves against further financial loss.
