Caller Said I Won $2.5 Million, Demanded MoneyPak Card

A man called me, sounding Jamaican, and said I had won the American Cash Awards sweepstakes, with a prize of $2.5 million dollars plus a Mercedes Motor Car. He had me write down a few numbers and read them back. They were the numbers of my supposed check along with a pin number.

Next he said that for my winnings to be released within the following four to five minutes, I must visit the closest Walmart or CVS Pharmacy and buy a preload MoneyPak card from Green Dot worth $165.00, which supposedly would spare me from paying more in taxes. After doing so, I was supposed to call him again and read him the digits printed on its reverse side.

When I got back I phoned him, and he told me they were assembling my package. I was then passed to an agent from "Geico" Insurance. That person told me to go to the closest Western Union and wire $480.00, which would let them release my car and show that it was insured. I would supposedly receive that money back by mail within 48 hours after the car arrived.

It struck me as disturbingly strange that both of them spoke in a thick Jamaican accent, and neither could tell me my address. Luckily, I had scratched off the digits on that card slightly too hard, so some were unreadable. He kept pushing and insisted that I get another card.

He claimed his job was at risk if I did not follow his instructions. I answered that if giving me the prize mattered so much, they were welcome to deliver it to my door and I would pay them from my winnings. He called me a liar and asked when I could provide the card numbers. I said Monday, which was two days after the call. Afterwards I researched the outfit and came across other reports. Something about it plainly stank.
