Paying Through PayPal Left Me With 200 Dollars Store Credit

I made a huge purchase on Target's website and paid by my Amex through PayPal because the website encouraged me to do so, saying it is "Safer."

When I decided to return a few items, I found out that the only way is to get store credit, because paying through PayPal makes it appear as if you used a "Gift Card" as a payment method.

So now I am stuck with $200 of Target store credit instead of a credit to my Amex.
