Job offer on Craigslist
Creditreport.com Scam

Miscellaneous

BEWARE of Craigslist job postings. Some may be CreditReport.com scams.

I responded to a job listing for a receptionist job at a small real estate office that seemed to pay a little more than usual. So I was excited about it. But when I got a response back four days later, this is what the email said...

Thank you for answering our classified ads job posting. We're happy to inform you that after reading hundreds of resumes, we'd like to offer you an interview for a position on our staff. As of this moment, we have narrowed it down to three possible candidates, including yourself.

First, our company policy requires all potential applicants to obtain credit reports to insure our company against liabilities and potential issues. So the next step of the hiring process includes getting your credit report checked. Don't worry—a poor score will not affect your employment chances. This part of company policy is strictly for us to feel more secure about hiring you and confirming your identity.

Click here to receive your report. As soon as you have obtained your report, please email me the Transaction ID #. Please, DO NOT include any sensitive information in any emails. Please perform this step quickly, as we would like to fill the position very soon. Upon receipt of your Transaction #, myself or Mr. Gordon, our HR manager, will get back to you to set up a meeting.

Again, thank you for your interest, and I hope to hear from you soon.

There were many RED FLAGS that this was a scam. ONE, the job posting said small real estate office while the email clearly says it's a travel agency. TWO, why would they need to confirm my identity before an interview? Am I a make-believe person? THREE, the name James McIntyre is so cliche and not typed correctly. How could someone type their own name wrong especially something so oblivious as capitalization. FOUR, no other contact information was given. No phone number, no address. Nothing. AND FIVE, the BIG one!!! Companies do not make YOU pay for a credit check. Even if it is a "free" first-time report. It is the companies responsibility to pay for a credit check, which they would NOT do unless they had the intention of hiring you.

Do not fall for such a blatant scam!!!
