Ripoff Highly deceptive ad for employment, employees virtually unwilling to reveal details of employment

Miscellaneous

Say you're in college and are looking for summer work. How does this sound?

"General Summer Jobs $500/Week Openings with Scranton's premier advertising company. Want to have fun this summer, gain experience, make money? Work with Top golf courses & entertainment in downtown Scranton for the summer. Paid training. Call Alexis at 963-9288."

Sounds great, right?

So, I called and got a response a day later. The man said to come in for an interview anytime between 5 and 7 o'clock. I thought it was strange for an office to be open past 5 o'clock, but made an appointment for 5. So, I arrive and the office is located in a small, nondescript building, and the office itself is comprised of three sparsely furnished rooms. The interview was lasted maybe ten minutes, and the man was friendly but didn't say anything about the company or the position. He offered me a second interview (which was to last all day from 11am-8pm), which of course sounds promising, so I agreed to come back several days later.

On the day of the second "interview, " I was asked to sign a form acknowledging that I would not be compensated for this "interview" and was then escorted outside to the parking lot with one of the "account executives." He was in his early 20's, much like myself. After some small talk, he informed me that we were going to drive an hour away to Binghamton to "promote" two pizza chains at homes, businesses, and colleges. He said that pay was to be discussed over lunch. He showed me the "promotion materials" and they amounted to nothing more than coupon booklets. I asked if this door-to-door sales, and he actually denied it, using roundabout and borderline intimidating language to assure me that I wanted to come with him to go through with this.

So, not only is this "company" NOT a "premier" advertising company, they do not pay 500$ per week, NO work is done with actual golf courses or entertainment at all, and NONE of the work is done in downtown Scranton. To top it off, there is no Alexis!

I said goodbye and left after none of my questions were answered. They would not reveal any details about anything.

A friend of mine called on an ad saying something to the effect of "promotions company with an overload of clients, promotions coordinator needed ASAP, 30-35K/year, Call Pam at #-#-#" - well, it turned out to be the same people using a different phone number, and there is no Pam!

These people try to reel in unsuspecting young people, then attempt to get you into cars with strangers to go sell door-to-door in remote locations, well away from the office. Their employment ad is totally bogus. To top it off, they have a BBB sticker on their office door, yet are not listed with them. Ironic that the BBB office in Moosic is located in the same small office complex!
