Miscellaneous

I received a call from someone with a very thick Indian accent named "Brad Smith, " who informed me that he was following up on a "request" I made to cancel my service with the "Public Yellow Pages." I told him that I was not aware of ever signing up with the "Public Yellow Pages, " but he insisted that I had an account with them and that if I didn't get a "cancellation number" right away, I would have to pay $599.00 for a new year of service. Then "Mr. Smith" transferred me to the "quality assurance division, " where a gentleman named "David" told me that I would be sent an invoice for $599.00 for the previous 12 months' service. When I asked "David" to fax me information on the order I placed, he told me that he could not provide that information and would transfer me back to "Mr. Smith." Then the call was dropped. A few minutes later, "Mr. Smith" called back again, at which point I told him that I wanted information on the order I placed so that I could verify it. Just like another complaint logged onto Scambook, the more questions I asked, the more emphatic "Mr. Smith" became, and he told me that he didn't need to send me paperwork... All I needed to do was to answer "yes" to all the questions that the "quality assurance division" asked me, and then he would call back to obtain the "cancellation number" that I would get so that I would not have to pay the invoice. "Mr. Smith" then transferred me back to the "quality assurance division, " and I answered OK to a bunch of questions (which I now regret, because they have me recorded now indicating that I am authorized to accept and pay an invoice for $599.00). I too was told that if I paid with a credit card right then, that I would receive a $100 discount. I chose to receive a paper invoice instead (which then puts all this in writing so that I can fight it). Then "Mr. Smith" called back and I gave him the cancellation number I received. I told "Mr. Smith" that I tried calling the number he used to call me, and that it came up as a dead number - the number is (919) 301-0759. He explained that he was using a "voice over internet" line, so he cannot receive call at that number. Now I'm waiting for a "cancellation notice" and an invoice for a service that I'm now sure I didn't order, but I went through this process because I wasn't completely sure at the time that I didn't order the service - I was given no time to stop and look through my files.
