Miscellaneous

In early August, I started to receive unsolicited emails from "newsletter@adultmovieclub.com" which I found particularly alarming for several reason, starting with the realization that, unlike most mass spammings, this one was specifically targeting me directly: The email contained the "login information I would need to access the site, " stating that, by clicking on the link to the site, and entering the User Name and Password they provided, I would activate a 30-day subscription and be charged $39.95 immediately and every 30 days thereafter until I cancelled - a common and very-easily recognizable scam. Except that in this case, the username and password they provided were ones that I had personally created for another site many months ago and have used many times since. They had information they should not have had access to. So I immediately used their "unsubscribe" link and trashed their email. But the emails kept coming anyway, all stating the same thing. Several per week at one point.

I finally went to their site in order to contact their billing support. As SOON as I got to the site, (and without entering any user name or password or doing ANYTHING else for that matter), I received an email notification from my credit card alerting me to a $39.95 charge. I WAS PISSED! I accessed my card account online, found the name of their billing service, PunitronHelp.com, and contacted them and told them the charge was unauthorized. They apologized, and told me they reversed the charge, and it would post to my card in 7–10 days. When I began to complain about adultmovieclub.com's aggressive and egregious tactics, the billing agent explained that they were just the pay service and adultmovieclub.com was just one of their clients. I should contact them directly to lodge a complaint about their questionable practices.

After 10 days went by, with no change to my card, I contacted Punitron again, and they told me their system showed that they reversed the charges 10 days prior, and that it should post to my credit card the next day, today.

It didn't. When I called today, I was told that the previous agent "didn't properly reverse the charge, " but that they would do so immediately and send an e-mail confirmation, which they did, which also stated that it would take yet another 7–10 days to post. It was then that I realized that Punitron and AdultMovieClub are, in fact, one in the same, as their address indicates. What has me most concerned is the fact that they obviously have the means to acquire my username and password info from another site.
