Eneging on a verbal deal

On Mondaay 8/2, I called David at Village Subaru in Acton discussing buying a 2010 Impreza. After two phone calls of negotiation, we agreed on the car price of $16,499, with automatic, hatch back, silver or dark grey color, brand new. I asked if a deposit is needed and I was told no. I was asked when I could go in to the dealership to sign all papers and get the car, I told them that it would be either Friday 8/6 or Saturday 8/7. I followed with an email confirmation that evening to David. I called Wednesday 8/4 to see if I can go in on Thursday 8/5 instead and was told (not by David, but some other person in the dealership) that he did not see any problem. But I left my cell phone number for them to call if there is any question or concern. This morning 8/5, I called David at 9:40 AM and was told that I had to speak to his boss, John. John told me that they never signed the deal because I had not paid the price of the car. The fact that they never answered my email indicates that they had not promised anything.in short, they reneged on the deal and wanted to sell me the red Impreza in their possession at $16,850. I do not know if verbal deal is legally binding or not. But I certainly trusted the verbal agreement and stopped shopping after the deal was carried out over the phone.
