Senior Ciizens scamed while trying to find relatives and geneology

Miscellaneous

I am a senior citizen that wanted to research my relatives and geneology, finding locations and dates of birth and death for grandparents.
This site offered all of the above "free" at first, then the screen for charge of $19.95 came up and I gave them my bank card.
While trying my first search, it asked for another $2.95 to "view full report", so I again gave them my bank card, only to see that the charge is actually $19.95 monthly, not just a yearly subscription fee.
They gave an address to e-mail to cancel my subscription—it was a "bogus" address and my cancellation message came back to me as "rejected.
Now I must contact my bank, attempting to block the charges, which will probably cost me a fee to do so.
Since this topic is very common and popular, how could I have known or checked out their validity? I sure wish that I could have, now I feel so taken advantage of, and no way to further my frustration other than report them as a "scam" provider.
