New River Subscription Service
Ripoff, sold magazine subscription and never delivered. Ripoff

Miscellaneous

I was approached in my apartment complex parking lot in NC while getting my mail after work in January. A tall, slim, young, African-American male with blonde hair came rushing across the parking lot towards me asking me to wait. Being the kind person I am, I stopped and listened to his savvy sales pitch regarding magazine subscriptions.

He informed me that he is a college student at the University of Iowa and if he sells the most magazine subscriptions, New River will cover his tuition costs. I began thumbing through the magazine list and picked out Car and Driver for my boyfriend. The seller then said that I could not buy just one subscription, the minimum is two. I gave him the list and told him that I did not want 2 subscriptions and began to leave when he said that he was just kidding and that he was trying to help out his buddy who is also selling magazines. This should have been the red flag! Why would you help someone else when they are your competition in a contest for free tuition?!

I then proceded to complete the sales form and issued him a check for 29.00. He then went on to explain the procedure for cancelling my subscription and it is even explained on the sales form. I actually never wanted the subscription but have a hard time saying NO, therefore, I went straight to my computer in my apartment and typed up my cancellation request since it must be sent within 3 business days of purchase. I sent it out the following day. Within a week, I received a letter from NRSS stating that they would honor my cancellation request and asked that I send them a copy of the cashed check and a copy of my sales form... That was 6 months ago and I have not heard another word about it.

I constantly write letters requesting my reimbursement, however, I receive no response. The telephone number the boy gave me is not in service and no one answers the 1-800 line. I suggest that everyone else who has been taken by NRSS file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and follow up with your case. We need to put an end to this business of ripping off kind, honest citizens! We must take action or others like us will face the same injustice we have! Take a stand for unsuspecting consumers everywhere and FILE AGAINST NEW RIVER SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE today! I personally am taking a trip to Roanoke/Christiansburg to demand my money back. Hopefully they actually have an office at this address! If not, that will be even more proof of their dishonest scheme.
