Pier 1 Imports, Inc
Customer questioning - Point of purchase practices

Miscellaneous

Hi!

I have a house full of Pier 1 merchandise and first shopped there as a young bride, in their first store in Alexandria, VA.

I now live in a smallish community on Oahu, HI where we have our own Pier 1 store. Last night I realized that I was finding their exit/point of purchase practice offensive. Before my purchase was rung up, I was asked my phone number and e-mail address (somewhat initimate, at least personal questions for the benefit of the Pier 1 marketing strategist). Providing the information implies a certain level of "trust" by the purchaser. Then, when making a credit purchase, I'm asked to provide a personal ID along with my credit card. I found this offensive. I felt like I was expected to demonstrate a certain level of "trust" when providing personal information to Pier 1. Where's the customer trust, Peir 1? If I risk providing you with my personal information, I ask that you take the risk that my credit card is genuine also. (By the way, I was making a less than $20 purchase at this time.)
