Tried to rip off mam in law

My mother in law recieved a letter stating she had won 660,000euro we told her straight away not to reply but being too trusting she did anyway and like everyone else was asked for her next of kin and all the rest. Before we knew anymore about it she had given her bank details to these animals and was all excited telling us she was going to clear our mortgage pay our bills and take us and our children on holiday. We got online immediately to find out more and to our horror discovered so many others scammed by the same company. Once we realised what it was we had to cancel her bank account and set up a new one straight away. Has anyone actually lost money to these people??? I havnt read anything that states the overall outcome, all i know for sure is my mother in law is devastated extremely depressed and embarrassed. How are these people getting away with this??? From what ive read its going on a long time.
