Manipulating Transactions to create overdrafts

Just today, i was in conversation with suntrust bank about their policy of paying largest amounts first. My account showed an amount available, of which, i had checks against that amount. All the transactions showed as being processed. I made a mistake of putting through a payment on the wrong date, which should have been 1 day later. That night a check was being deposited to cover the delayed amount. The bank takes it upon themselves to pay the largest amount first, they say, which then created a negative amount for all the checks that i had already had covered.
I told them, i thought it was wrong for them to make that decision. They should not pay it. They said that it was the policy of the bank to pay the largest amount first. We as a consumer have no choice. I told them that this procedure was implemented by them to create nsf amounts. They, of course, denied this. It seems to me to be a no brainer. If the available amount is such, and all items pending have been processed, that should be my balance.
