I received a call about a week ago regarding a $40 check I'd written to my child's school. The individual identified herself as Ms Isette and said that she was calling from Rephen Law Firm to collect on a fraudulent check I'd written. According to her I'd written a check on an account that didn't exist. Knowing that this was not true, I disputed what she was saying at which point she because irate and verbally abusive. After about 3 minutes of this abuse I was able to get a word in and to tell her that her information was incorrect but I'd shoulder the burden of responsibility and find out what to do. She proceeded to tell me that unless I paid the fee immediately, they would start court proceedings. With all the screaming I became frazzled and simply agreed to send her the $200 she was requesting. After talking to my husband, I decided to find out exactly what was going on.

Because of a keying error (on the school's part) it did appear that I'd written a fraudulent check but according to the school system guidelines, the fees are not to exceed $25.in the meantime, Ms Isette calls me back with more screaming and name calling. When I tell her that I've contacted the Public School System and am resolving the problem she completely loses it and tell me that since I am refusing to pay that the refusal is documented and for me to find a lawyer.

With the information I have acquired, I would not recommend that anyone send money to these people without a thorough investigation of their claim. If you owe, then be certain that you are paying the right amount to the right person. Do NOT let them extort excessive money from you!
