A debt that I did't know ever existed!

I, just today (12/30/08), received a letter that i owed $6,684.67 to levitz furniture store.

I have not or ever have bought anything at a levitz furniture store.

What do i do and how do i fix this. Knowing that this company is not reputable and being investigated for fraud, i feel that i should just ignore it. But if it ends up on my credit report (which they can't do without it being verified) but if it does what is my recourse? If they can do this they probably can fraudulently verify it to hurt my credit.

If it is legally verified then someone fraudulently bought furniture in my name.

The letter is not very official looking nor does it contain legal rights to those supposedly in past debt on the back of the letter like a legal debt notice should contain.

I feel this is fraud in its highest. Help!!!
