Applegate - MacDonald scam or Canada

I recieved a letter in the mail today from Applegate EDM, Inc. Stating I had won a sweepstakes, with the letter was a check in the amount of 3,460.00 dollars. All of the participants were selected online, and of course me being me I fill out a lot of sweepstakes, so thought it might be true.

The check that was recieved was suppose to be cashed and then sent by moneygram back to the company, well the man who sent it, but I got to keep 200.00 dollars of the money. The 3,260.00 was to pay for taxes and surcharges, and I would recieve the 52,540 after the taxes and surcharges were processed. Sounds like a good deal, and Christmas would be paid for!

So I called this "Craig MacDonald" and asked what this was for, he said it could be for signing up for a Target, or Wal-Mart credit card, at that time I knew something was wrong, I dont sign up for credit cards. So I asked him if this was a scam, and he assured me that this was a "real" company and not a scam. I looked at the envelope again and noticed it had a Canada stamp on it (strange?).

After getting off the phone, I went online and looked up Applegate EDM, Inc. And it is a real company, but none of the phone numbers matched up to the phone number that I had recieved in the letter. So I went to yellowpages and typed the phone number in to find out, it is a Quebec Canada telephone number which is strange if the company is in Texas.

I called the owner of Applegate EDM, Inc.in Texas and he confirmed the account had been closed for three weeks now, and that I had been the 17th person to call that day. He reported that he gets about 30 calls a day with the same problem.
