My boyfriend recieved a letter in the mail about what seemed like a good deal to get magazines, 5 magazines a month for payments of $27.75 for 36 months before the remaining 2 years are free.

However after re-evaluation of his finances he concluded that he did not wish to spend that money on magazines and called to cancel. When setting up the subscription he was told by 2 seperate representatives that to cancel the service was inconvienient but still possible. However when attempting to cancel and speaking with the supervisor he was told it is both impossible and were refusing to speak in any more details about it. The woman we spoke with on the phone stated she had recorded proof of a verbal agreement stating he was aware of a no-cancellation policy with the company.

There is a law called the Statute of Frauds, which basically requires certain types of contracts to be in writing. For instance, contracts for the sale of real property, in excess of $500, and importantly for you, contracts which by their nature cannot be performed in one year. The payment plan set up by this company doubles that.
