Miscellaneous

On the morning of Friday June 6 I had a move scheduled with Starving Students Moving Company. Everything started out as planned except for only two men showed up to my home when I had specifically requested 3 men because of the large amount of small items and storage I had on top of several pieces of furniture. I originally spoke with someone and asked for 2 men, however about a week ago, I realized I had too much stuff for just two men, and I called back and changed not only the two men to three men, but I also changed the date of the move. (Originally we were scheduled for an earlier date and then I closed escrow early, so I rescheduled for June 6th.)

After the very nice men arrived, they got straight to work packing box after box and loading it into their truck. Throughout the whole move I stressed the importance of safely packing all my belongings because most of everything I have are very old expensive antiques that are irreplaceable. After a few hours of this, the men started to show concern of not having enough packing supplies to complete the job. They then said they had a friend who was moving someone else down the street, I offered to drive to him and pick up the necessary supplies to finish the job. The appropriate thing to do, would be to call the branch office and have them drive over the packing material. After driving from my home in Beverly Hills to Brentwood which is about 3 miles away I was starting to become annoyed. The starving students mover that I met in Brentwood was very unpleasant and gave me a lot of attitude, everything from dirty looks to basically throwing piles of boxes on the side of my and not even offering to help load them in the car. He left me to do everything. Meanwhile, I was the one offering to help so we could expedite the job over in Beverly Hills. After I left Brentwood I stopped to pick up some hamburgers for my movers. They were very appreciative and continued to work well into the early morning hours.in the meantime, I called Starving Students at their 800 number 2 times, complaining about how long it was taking and I never heard back from them! The movers ran out of packing material and had to use paper from the telephone book to wrap the remaining things! The other items, they just put in the truck and said it would be safe. Boy were they wrong! They did not end up leaving my one bedroom home until 3:30 A.M. And even then not all of my things were loaded into the truck!!! 3:30 A.M.! Had the movers come prepared with enough material, and an extra man, this job should have been all finished that afternoon. So I left some remaining things in the houses that the movers would come back for the next day, after they unloaded everything in the truck into the storage place. The movers and I agreed to meet the next morning at the storage facility to unload everything. On top of everything, they had the nerve to charge me an overnight storage fee of $100 (as if it is my fault it took them so long!). We met the next morning and they started to unpack everything. They offered to meet us at the public storage site, pack the things in our space and go back to the house in the morning to gather the rest of my stuff. I was surprised they did not show up with a third man to help them unload everything and wrap the items they put in the truck the night before that they did not wrap because they ran out of material.

When they were unloading my items, I noticed things scratched up and I really observed the way everything was packed into the truck. It was so unprofessional. Things were unwrapped, canvases were leaning up against other canvases, chairs were piled next to each other, and my gorgeous 18th century clock was on the floor. So I decided to document as much as possible and took several photographs of the condition of which everything was packed. It took the movers from either 10 or 11 that morning, until 6 or 7 that night!!! They seemed to be wrapping most of the items that were in the truck, but it was too late already, everything was getting banged around while they were moving everything over.

So by the time we left the storage place, (and mind you, I reminded the movers all day that the storage place closed at 8:55 pm, so we needed to hurry) we went back up to my house to collect the items they did not get the night before. Ray the mover was rushing everything out of the house and was telling me to leave certain items, as we did not have time to get them out of the garage and get back to the storage place. I was not about to leave a $10,000 mirror in my garage or a couch base of an $11,000 couch. He and his partner got in the truck and started to take off, I was telling him to stop, he did not get everything and he would not stop and he left me there with the remaining items. So I had to load them in my car. These items of course got damaged in my car, but what really made me angry, is I was left to lift a 200 pound stone statue into my car which I at 130 pounds am not capable of doing.

I got overt to the storage place and waited for Ray and his partner, and they never showed up! By 9:15 or 9:30, well after the storage place was closed, I left. I spoke with them later that night and they said they would meet me their the following morning to unload the final stuff. We arranged for 9 A.M. At 9:30, I called and spoke to the rudest human being ever. His name is John Silver. John did not treat me like a customer, but rather like cattle. He was disrespectful to me, and I got very upset. He said the 2 men would show up at 10. I waited until 10:15 and know one showed up. I called John back and he said they wouldn't be there for another hour. He argued with me. I said this is absurd, I owe a remainng balance of $300 and I am not paying it. He said That's your choice sir, but if you do that then you can not file any claim. You have to pay the bill and then file your claim. I said Fine I will pay the $300, and then file a claim, but I find it offensive that after all of this headache and inconvenience you guys have put me through, starting on Friday June 6th, and still not over on Tuesday, it takes a lot of nerve for you to even ask for the additional money. But I will still pay.

The men finally arrive, one guy was, Ray's attitude was completely different. He was very disrespectful towards me. He said Open the storage place so we can get this stuff in there and get out of here. I opened the storage unit, and they took the stuff out of the truck and placed it in the storage. They did not wrap these remaning items, and they said Management told us just to unload everything. I told Ray to unload those additional items out of my car and he refused. He said he was told to only unload stuff out of the truck. I called John Silver back and he said I am not having my men unload your stuff out of your car. I said It's not my fault it is in the car in the first place, it is your guys fault because they took off in the van the night before without taking everything he said I don't care, I am not letting my guys unload the car of a guy who asks my men to individually wrap each one of his shoes I said What are you talking about John Silver said You told my movers to wrap each one of your shoes That is a lie, I never asked them to wrap each one of my shoes, and they didn't wrap each one of my shoes. I at one point asked them how they packed my shoes. I said Do you wrap the shoes or just throw them in a big box? That was what I said the day before, I never told them to wrap the shoes, it was a simple question because I was curious how they did it. So John said to me, if you unload everything out of the car yourself, they will move it in to the storage. Frustrated, I agreed. I told Ray to move the stuff in the storage and he refused. He and his partner got in the truck and took off, while I was telling him to stop. I was running along side the truck as he was backing out of the storage facility. I was telling him to stop and he was ignoring me and mumbling. So now I was left in this public storage facility by myself with all these remaining items which I had to take into the storage all by myself with out any help. This included a 200 pound statue.

I am honestly shocked at the service of this company. It is like out of a bad skit from Saturday Night Live, except when it happens to you, it is not funny. This move took 4 days! All my stuff was thrown in like it was garbage, and I got a ton of attitude. I am sending pictures as well of how everything was put into storage, as well as the stuff in the truck. This was the most unprofessional service I have ever experienced, and if anyone in Beverly Hills ever asks me about a good moving company, I will surely tell them about this horrendous event. No one would believe me if I told them. I am glad I have pictures to document everything.
