Company scams people who have lost pets in classifieds

I was called by a man on a Saturday after I put a lost dog ad in my local Ohio paper who identified himself as part of Petfinders. When I asked what they do, the man, he said his name was Gary Hack, said that they have local people that call every house in a 10-block radius for $59.99 and ask if they have seen your pet or if they have seen anyone else with the pet. I, like an idiot, gave him my credit card number, etc. When I got home I checked for their website (he told me they were under petfindersalert.com) and found just a plain page that had no testimonials, it was just like an advertisement. I googled the name and found that several other people had been contacted and scammed. I called back the number (it was 3 hours after the first call) and said I wanted to cancel the calls and he was a little nasty and said he had already worked on it and would charge me $20. I, unfortunately, am nonconfrontational and went along with it. Two days later a lady called me from "Petfinders" (not a local number, it was 702 Vegas area code) and said that they were busy calling people about my pet. When I told her I had cancelled it pretty much immediately, she said uh, OK and hung up. They had not called anybody, I am positive. I called my credit card company and they had already charged the $59.99. So I cancelled my card and got the $39.99 credited since $20 is what I verbally agreed on. I feel this is a fraudulant company that is preying on desperate lost pet owners that would do anything to get their pets back.incidentally, I got my dog back through the original ad that I placed in the paper...!
