Young man lied to sell me magazines

Miscellaneous

I was sitting at my apartment watching TV when I heard an odd knock on my door. I opened it to see a young man, probably around 22-23 years old, standing there. He told me he had just moved into the apartment complex and was going around meeting everybody. Said he was happy to finnally see somebody that wasnt an "old person".

He then mentioned that I might be able to help him out with something. He handed me a laminated card that had some info about a rewards program he was in, where he gets points to go overseas and such. Said his uncle had been doing it since the 80s with alot of luck. Explained that he was part of a large group in the area, was glad that he got to me first, asked me about my occupation, then told me to ask him how he gets his points.

He showed me a brochure of some magazines after I asked him how he gets points. He then asks me if he can take my name down just to say to his supervisor that he met me and chatted, Im like sure. I let him into my apartment, he sits down and starts filling out the form. Puts in my adress, but doesnt put in the apartment number, which I thought was odd. Anybody that moves into an apartment knows you need the apartment number on the mailing address.

He then asks me what magazine subscription I would like. I tell him im interested in one, he tells me I can get no less than a 2 year subscription for $50, which seems a little pricey. I say sure, why not, figured it wouldnt hurt to pay a little more to help him out. He puts it on the form, figured up his "points", which seemed odd to me, because he put down 290 points, when the magazine was only worth 80 per the brochure. He told me he gets bonus points for meeting somebody in my career field, a web developer. I start getting a little suspesious, but think oh well, he lives in my apartment complex, no biggie if this turns sour. I fill out the check, sign the form and the check. After handing it to him, he asks me if he can use my phone real fast. I hand him my cell, he calls his uncle to come pick him up, and he is out the door like a bolt of lightning. He hops into a rather beat-up Ford Explorer where I could see about 3 other people in the vehicle. Lives in my apartment complex, yea right!

I immediately look up the company online and found this website. I cant beleive I fell for the scam. I knew there was no way I would ever see a magazine, due to he didnt even put down my apartment number. I put a stop payment on the check today. Funny thing is, I have his uncle's cell number saved in my phone now, have his name written down. Going to see if I can do anything with it all.
