Universal Subscription Agency
Ripped me off for $60 for 2-year magazine subscription which has never arrived

Miscellaneous

On this past October 8, a Mr. Adam Moreland came to my residence and solicited me to purchase magazine subscriptions from Universal Subscription Agency in order for he and his classmates to earn points toward winning an all expense paid trip to Cancun. Mr. Moreland said that he and his class members were local high school students and that they worked this subscription drive each year at this time. He informed me that he had just left my neighbor up the street who had purchased several magazines to send over to our troops in Iraq and that I could do that as well if I wanted.

Mr. Moreland had a cock-sure and smooth-talking attitude and I guess I should have suspected something right off the bat. He also looked much older than the high school student that he professed to be. However, I let his persausive behavior talk me into writing a check for $60 for a 2-year subscription which included a $13 processing and handling fee. Mr. Moreland stated that should I change my mind about the subscription, that I could cancel the transaction anytime prior to midnight of the third business day after the date of transaction. Details on how to do this were written on the back of the receipt forms he gave me.

My suspicion was aroused again when he told me to allow at least 120 days before delivery of my first magizine. I asked him why 4 months to wait to receive a magazine? I told him that I have subscriptions to other magazines and not one of them took 120 days for delivery. Most arrived in a few weeks. When I questioned this he quickly stated that the extra time was due to the heavy volume of subscriptions and processing and handling time. I should have seen through that, but let it pass, afterall, there was a telephone number and mailing address for the agency listed on the receipt, so I figured I could give them a call after the 120 days if the magazine hadn't arrived.

Well, you guessed it, 120 days has come and gone and no magazine. I proceeded to call the number listed on the receipt form and was greeted with a recorded female voice who informed me of the office hours and that I needed to enter 10 to speak with an operator. I entered 10, it rang twice and was answered by another recorded voice, this time male, who informed me that all lines were currently busy with agents helping other customers and that I should leave a short message as for the reason for the call, my name and phone number, and one of the agents would call me as soon as possible. I could also log onto universalsubscriptionagency.com and leave a message there and an agent would respond to me within 48 hours. Well, no sooner had he finished speaking, than another recorded voice came on to inform me that this mailbox was full and could accept no more messages. I was to press any key to return to the message, but when I did this, the whole process repeated. I finally hunk up in disgust. I got onto my laptop and typed in www.universalsubscriptionagency.com expecting to get a 404 or some other error, but to my surprise a seemingly legitimate looking site popped up. I was able to leave a message asking when I was to receive my magazine since it was way beyond the 120 days I was expected to wait. I sent the message and everything seemed to go off ok. I have yet to hear back from them and that was over 5 days ago that I sent the message.

I have continued to call Universal Subscription Agency at different times of the day and different days of the week and the call always ends with the same full mailbox message and a recycle through the voicemail.

I will probably never get my subscription or my $60 back, but if this can save someone else from making the same mistake that I did, then some good has come of it. Just remember, that unless you know who you are dealing with, to be very cautious and thoroughly confident of whom you are dealing prior to shelling out your hard earned dollars. It's a good idea to ask the solicitor to show some credentials as well as contact the the Better Business Bureau to check out the company on the Intenet prior to commiting to any type sales pitch. Any reputable salesperson, would not be offended for you checking on their validity. After all... It's your money.
