Verizon Bill from 9 years ago?

My wife just received a bill for 200 bucks, supposedly from an old Verizon account (1998). I called on her behalf. The account was a valid account but she's sure she never defaulted on it, plus, she's moved a few times since and never had any problem reconnecting to Verizon. Despite not giving any info other than that I was her husband, the idiot on the line freely talked about my wife's former addresses from her credit report. This in itself is, or should be, illegal. She told me it was an old phone debt from such and such an address from 1998. She told me AFNI bought the debt this year, I told her they wasted their money and hung up. I called my wife and askedher about it. She was furious that they talked about her personal info with someone other than her. She confirmed she never had any debt on that account. I called Verizon, and all they could say is they sold debt to AFNI and had no other info, I had to ask AFNI. I did some research, then I called back and got the ultimate ChowderHead on the phone. I told him I got this letter, and asks who I am, I tell him I am her husband (he starts calling me "Mr (my wife's maiden name)".. He explains that this is an outstanding debt from 1998. I tell him Verizon knows nothing about it. He says they wouldn't because they sold the debt. I say OK prove to me the debt is valid, so he tells me he doesn't have to, the burden of proof is on me. I say Oh, so I get a letter in the mail saying I have to pay you, this means I should just pay you. He says yea it sounds messed up but that the way it be (just like that)... I start sounding concerned... Oh my... What can I do? Is there anything you have that can prove this debt to me before I pay it? He says he has my wifes ss# and DOB... I'm like let me get this straight, you idiot... So if I tell you I had your ss# and DOB, you'd owe me 200 bucks? He says he needs to clarify. This is a valid debt, because Verizon says it is. They don't just mail people fraudulent debts... I cut him off and say OH YES YOU DO... IT'S ALL OVER THE NET, he says the net be lies man the net be lyin. The burden of proof is on me and this is and will continue to be an active collection. I explain to him there is a statute of limitations of 6 years and he says with his chest out well the credit statute is SEVEN years (the debt is from 1998??? A clue???).. So I tell him good luck collecting it you (expletive deleted). I'm glad I saw this site which shed some light on these troglodytes. Seems most everyone is receiving OLD BILLS well the SOL is expired people they can't do NOTHING! Let them report you you have it wiped off, don't be intimidated. I'll be making a pre-emptive strike by calling the big 3 tomorrow, thanks AFNI for the laughs today and thanks again to this site...
