Many unethical, unscrupulous auto repair shops will automatically fail the car for a smog test AND still charge the consumer FULL rate of $50-$70 for the smog check, if a faulty "check engine" light is on (and there is no engine problem - just a faulty light).

Some honest shops post a signs warning consumers informing them about a "check engine" light - these shops deserve a "kudos" for their honesty, but please avoid shops that do NOT post a warning sign.

CONSUMERS - please be sure to fix the light/check engine issue PRIOR to SMOG TEST - otherwise, unscrupulous auto shops will take your hard-earned $50-$70 for 1-2 minutes of "work"!
