Sweepstakes and Lottery Check Fraud

I just received a letter in the mail like many, that I am a winner of a lottery drawing. With the letter was a check for $4975.00. There was a phone number on it with 2 different contacts on it. I called it out of curiousity just to see what it was about.

The woman who answered said congratulations you have won 450,000.00. Just deposit the check and call her after I did for further instructions how to receive the remainder of the winnings. I so wanted it to be true, but nothing is for nothing. I first came across this sight and found many have received something similar. I just wanted to see how it works for them. Nobody really advised what can happen if you cash the check.

I searched BBB and found that this scam works off identity fraud. First they get a hold of a company's information and check. That is who's funds they try to use with the check issued. I called the company who's check I received and they advised me they had hundreds of checks that were sent out without their knowledge and that it was being investigated. They asked if I could give the check to my bank and advise them to give it to their fraud department. If you were to deposit this check it would most definitely bounce unless they used a new company who was not aware of the identity fraud yet.

After you would deposit the check you were to call them back and advise them you had deposited the check. At that point they advise you to send them money to process and mail your winnings to you. That is where they would get their money in this scam.

Bottom line is Nothing Is for Nothing! So beware!!!
