Charged $1,143 in finance charges saying they did not get payment

We sent in payment in full by the deadline. We sent it out on Nov 22 and the payment needed to be received by Dec 2 to avoid finance charges. We refinanced our home and a check in the amount of $4,308.01 was sent to avoid paying $1100 in deferred finance charges.

They claim that they did not receive the payment still to this day, and payment has not been returned to us. Out of all of the bills I have paid in my life this has never happened. I just find it hard to believe that it has been lost in the mail. I feel as though they are just trying to make a huge profit from the little guy.
