Mervyns account reported as charged off for $0.00

I had an account in 1992 with Mervyns which I paid successfully and on time. I canceled my account in 1992, owing $0.00. Now all of a sudden Mervyns has put on my credit that I have had my account charged off for $0.00, and it is a derogatory smear on my credit report now. I disputed it with the credit reporting agencies, and it is still coming up the same. What is up with this. Are they deliberately trying to hurt people who dropped them? I don't know how to clear this up either. Any suggestions?
