Specialty Merchandise Corp borderline fraud, non existant customer service, ripoff

My problems with SMC occurred approximately 4 years ago, but I recently saw they were still advertising so I decided to file this report.

Warning: If you pay SMC, particularly for a website, don't ever expect to get a dime of that money back if you are unsatisfied for any reason.

I purchased a website which was a two part purchase. One was for the website itself and one was for the ecommerce/credit card processing side of the site. The best I recall is that I paid around $2,000 for the whole package.

Problems started right away. The website was apparently built and ready (not that there was really anything to build) but the ecommerce side was never activated. So essentially I had half of a package. SMC had excellent customer service right up until they received my money. Then they turned off the customer service switch, COMPLETELY.

After weeks and weeks of phone calls and waiting it finally became apparent that I was not going to get the eccomerce side of the package. It also became very apparent that SMC puts up a very good front right up until they take your money.

I began asking for a refund of all my money. SMC fought this tooth and nail every step of the way. I filed complaints with the BBB (by the way this is when the were in Chatsworth Ca.) and learned that all the BBB does is mediate the complaint through letters. They simply advise you that SMC responded to your complaint and then ask if your satisfied. A totally and completely worthless process by the way.

After many letters and e-mails to SMC & the BBB I was no closer to getting any of my money refunded. One thing and one thing only resulted in me finally getting a refund. A formal complaint with the California State Attorney General's Office Consumer Fraud Division.
