National Magazine Exchange
Ripoff, pressure to buy, not listening to desire to cancel

Miscellaneous

I was at home sick from work today, and I checked the mail. I got a letter saying to call a number for a $1,000, 000 Sweepstakes offer, the "Strike it Rich IV" Sweepstakes. The number was 1-888-727-6247.

I had been entering alot of these contests in hopes of winning to pay off college, but would stop trying if I had to buy something. I figured this memo was in reference to a complaint I filed with one of those sweepstakes and called.

After confirming my information I was switched to a "supervisor" who then, after much pressuring me, got me to agree to give my credit card number for some magazines and prizes for entering the sweepstakes. I was sick, and he was bothering me, and I gave in to the pressure.

I felt uneasy about the whole thing after he refused to answer my questions about cancelling the subscriptions, so I called my bank to cancel my card. They said I couldn't because of pending transactions, and I'd have to cancel through the company to stop the billing. So I looked the company up on the internet after getting off the phone.

I found websites warning of them as a scam, and was immediately alarmed. I am furious at Publishers Clearing House for sharing the information, and furious at the company for pressuring me into the purchase. I can't even afford what they charged me (over $60).
