About a week ago I requested a new map listing on Google places for my partners business. Then yesterday I received a call from OPM stating they were calling from Google places and that my listing was going live today.

They stated that my account was for a year at a cost of £199. I was shocked and told them I thought the listing was for free. They did not correct me by saying they were offering additional services as a separate company. They continued to state they were from Google places and the extra cost was to get my listing on the top page of a Google map search when people searched for specific key words relating to our business.

The sales person (scam artist) also stated that for the £199 I was also able to control my Google place listing by amending my details when I wanted to and I was also able to check my Google ranking and add additional keywords to the listing for people to search.

I am new to these types of listings and so stupidly I thought that they could increase our searchability and therefore agreed to pay £150 plus vat on a 14 day invoice term.

When I received the email I knew something was wrong as it was from a company called OPM and not Google places, I then searched for the company name and found this site and various others (thank god). I sent them am email straight away stating I do not wish to start the account so please could they cancel.

I am currently awaiting a response and not looking forward to it based on the information on this site, oh well!!! You live and learn.

I now believe based on the information that I have read that they are not actually offering a service!!! You can amend your Google place details and check your ranking on Google for free and as for getting my listing to rank higher I don't think they can actually do that. Google ranking is based on various things to do with the number of hits on your website, the amount of websites linking to your website and the type of content of your website. (anyone correct me if i'm wrong here).

If OPM are not actually providing a service then their cannot be a contract, can their?

I will not be giving them any money and will be reporting them to both trading standards and google
