I just woke up to a horror story… I found this apartment in Ibiza, and I booked it through Airbnb. I got an email back saying the host declined my payment. Crap. So I emailed her saying why, and she said you need to pay the amount requested plus an additional Airbnb fee to book. I said fine, so she said let's continue communication on this email. The email wasn't blocked like it was supposed to, it was visible. So I emailed her. She said, she has prepared an invoice through Airbnb and I should receive it at any moment. Please check your spam as well. So I did. It was there. It was email from automated@airbnb.com. I thought it was legitimate. It had an Airbnb design, an account under the name of Airbnb Inc, and a wire number. The woman emailed me again saying please confirm once you pay, and I will receive your contact details through Airbnb so we can call each other. I sent the wire, and soon as I did, the account was deleted from Airbnb, and the apartment was no longer visible on the site. I was like, shit! So I immediately contacted Airbnb and explained what happened. I received an email 8 hours from a community support representative saying you should not have contacted someone outside our site, and we are not responsible. My heart skipped a beat. I jumped out of bed and rushed to the bank to request they halt the transaction. Transaction gone…. I just lost all my money.
