Accepted deposit but did not deliver project

We retained MakeTick 's service through Guru.com and after receiving very impressive links to websites supposedly created by MakeTick and great techno-lingo about their ability to convert our database to web pages, we signed their agreement - and, foolishly, gave them a deposit upfront. The project's completion estimate was 44 days. After 30 days, we had received nothing but 3 worthless sample pages of a shopping cart - which was the easiest part of the project and something we were willing to do ourselves. When we inquired about it, we received excuses and promises. MakeTick then requested another deposit for the "second" part of the project. Since we had not seen any results from the first part of the project that was worth the $1,042 initial deposit, we decided to cancel the project.
We had to "eat" the deposit because we had authorized Guru.com to pay it directly to MakeTick (instead of using their SafePay method). This was extremely difficult for our small nonprofit organization, but we could not see ourselves embroiled in spending more money on attorney fees to file lawsuit for a company based in India.
We cannot possibly recommend a company that apparently preys on unsuspecting consumers. And we also suspect that those writing great reviews about Maketick are their employees.
