EMusic
EMusic.com 7 RIP-OFF ALERT& eMusic FREE Trial defaults to $31.99 per mo. Plan if not canceled in 30 days

Internet & Web

Do not be fooled by eMusic's FREE trial. It is ANYTHING free — if you don't cancel within the first 30 days. They have the registration form set up with a selection of one of the highest cost plans ($31.99/mo.) rather than one of their lowest cost plans ($5.99/mo or so, per the customer serv. Rep.).

If you do not cancel it within 30 days, your credit card starts being charged $31.99/mo. Until you cancel it. For 6 months, that's almost $200.

Do yourself a favor — stick to buying individual songs or you'll feel VERY ripped off.

Suggestion to eMusic — Before legislation has to be enacted to police your industry (and all other on-line membership industries), you may want to consider being fair and at least having the default monthly program be the LOWEST plan available. Otherwise an attorney may construe this as PREDATORY PRICING and go after you and that attorney would have about 164 consumer leads on this site alone as potential class action participants). You may think it's a smart "business move", but in the end, you are opening yourself up to a class action lawsuit, legislation to protect consumers — or both - and killing your business long-term in the process. I personally HATE our litigious society and know that my settlement check will be about $4.00 while the law firm will take $100 million or more to the bank. So PLEASE don't give another reason to make it more litigious than it already is and do the right thing before you're forced to. You are screwing millions of busy people who have limited time to police you and are being silly enough to think youre doing the right thing. But — current management may not care. They probably are spending their time planning their move to maximize revenue so they can jump ship and move on to rape the next company that they can find that started out as a good idea. Its the new American Dream. After the lawsuit settles, the next mgmt. Group will most likely just raise the price on the $31.99 plan and keep it as the default. Why not, everyone else is doing it? Wake up people, the emperor has no clothes.
