I was interested in learning more about home based companies and SMC (Specialty Merchandising Corp.) Contacted me. First I talked to a lady employee who gave me a choice of silver or gold membership. It was not what we wanted, so she sweetened the deal by giving me a third option. I wanted to think about it. She would phone me back. Meanwhile, four other SMC employees contacted me. I explained that I was dealing with one person and I would stay with that one person. I left a message for the lady who contacted me, she never phoned me back.

Another lady phoned me the next day and I mentioned the 'sweet deal' that the first contact lady gave me. I asked deeper and more probing questions. This lady was unable to answer my questions so she had her Supervisor talk to us, (my business partner and I on conference call). He 'sweetened the deal' more. I asked for full disclosure or anything else I should be aware of and the answer was pretty much, you have all the answers to your questions. I made the mistake of signing up. Then found out there is a yearly membership fee. I never received my package, in time where I would be able to cancel within 30 days, which means that the company receives the returned product within the thirty days. I received my membership and noticed that I was in arrears for over one thousand dollars, before I even received my package, had a web site or anything else. Also I was not able to build my own web site because they have a contracted company which does it for them, and another cost. I was told different.

I left messages for someone to call me back every other day. No one did. I finally got a phone number and talked to someone in membership services. I asked for a cancellation due to being misinformed, and not receiving my package. I asked for a cancellation reference number. They can not do that. Only the person's ID number, date and time. I said if I receive the package I would send it back unpened. The Membership service gentleman said, 'it will never reach us, so don't bother." I asked why the company would not receive it and he said, "You live in Canada and it will be stopped at the border for tarrifs and such." Huh? But my being charged full price for the package depends on the company receiving back their shipment. So when I eventually receive it I will send it back by UPS. Having a UPS receipt helps for future proof. Which I will need, I'm certain of it.
