Pop up ad saying my computer infected and to buy virus protection program immediately C

I got a pop-up ad around Christmas warning me that my computer was infected with all kinds of worms and viruses and that I needed to buy a program immediately. I had been delaying buying such a program. I really thought my computer was infected. So, I bought the program Antiivus 2009 and got legitimate-looking pages popping up occasionally saying such and such had been removed and the computer was clean, etc. I haven't seen one of those pages for awhile. Now I discover there is no such program on my computer and I see that others were similarly scanned. I called the bogus number which is supposed to be a 24-hour customer service line and just got a recorder.
