What You Did and What You Should Have Done

Internet & Web

YOU DID: Trusted your valuables with total strangers. You don't know who they are, or where they are. If you were on the free plan, you got what you paid for - nothing. If you subscribed, you did so for the same reason I did... Because they offered the most space for the least amount of money.

WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE: Back up your files to CD's, DVD's, or an external hard drive, which you disconnect and put in the closet. Update and replace them often.

House may burn down? Put them in a safe deposit box or send them to a family member or trusted friend.

City may blow up? Send them to someone out of state.

Don't trust your friends? Send them in a locked metal box.

Of course you can upload to an on-line provider. Just make sure it's only one of several ways you back yourself up.

By the way, I got all but one of my files transferred ok, and I got quick responses to my questions. Maybe I'm just lucky.

I do agree with all the other comments - none of what I've said makes up for the lousy service. My guess is that they're not swindlers - they're just in over their heads. But don't open up a diner until you've learned how to cook.

Sorry about the folks who lost a lot, but at least you've learned something about digital stuff. It can evaporate.
